Cops and the Minimum Wage

Gryphon's avatarUtah Gryphon

Some of the people I follow on Twitter have been making the following observation: if a burger flipper is paid $15/hr plus benefits, they will be making the nearly the same as a cop who risks his life and has to endure lots of training.

It’s a fair observation. If fast food workers make what cops make, why would a cop risk his life and put up with all the hassle of it? Clearly the cop’s wage would have to be raised or else one of several bad things happens. Cops would leave for easier, equally well paying work; they would quit or retire; or they would stay because they love the job, but suffer from morale problems as their earning power dwindles and their colleagues go elsewhere.

At some point, police departments would have to raise the wages of their employees or else they would have an empty, ineffective…

Political leadership should be defenders of human rights

Proham

Proham views with serious concern the lack of political leadership and commitment in ensuring that human rights is well promoted, respected and protected in Malaysian society.

Three recent incidences display that human rights and fundamental liberties are under threat. The suspension of the printing permit of the weekly “The Heat” by the Ministry of Home Affairs; the issues surrounding the rights to peaceful assembly against rising prices and the raid by Islamic religious officials on The Bible Society of Malaysia and confiscation of Bibles are trampling religious liberty issues.

All three incidences pertaining to media freedom, peaceful demonstrations and religious freedom have negative implications for citizens’ rights in a democratic society governed under the Federal Constitution. The actions have been carried out by civil servants employed by the federal or state governments.

Members of the Military Left Out to Dry

An Average American Conservative's avatarAn Average American Conservative

As I listen to the whining of Boeing machinists here in Washington State over having to move from a Defined Benefit plan (pension) to a Defined Contribution plan (401k), I can’t help but think what spoiled brats they are.  You have a job that pays more than most private sector jobs out there.  This new contract gives you a better 401k than any other private sector company out there.  And, you are not being asked to potentially put your life on the line as part of your job every day.

The members of our nation’s military, on the other hand, are asked when they take their job to potentially put their life and limbs on the line in the course of doing their job.  And, what does our Congress and President do?  They reduce the amount a retired vet gets when he/she retires, including vets forced to retire because…

Indiana Lynn And The Trailer Of Doom

FRANKLIN-This time of year, the hubbub of bowl games, the NSA’s latest abominations, and Fox News’ continuing obsession with Obamacare can easily drown out really interesting news items. However, we here at the Times-Picayune like to keep our loyal readers informed. One such news story concerns Ms. Bonita Lynn Vela of Franklin, Indiana. Ms. Vela, an amateur vivisectionist specializing in home castration techniques, was arrested after she apparently attempted the impromptu emasculation of an unwilling participant.

The alleged victim was the boyfriend of one of her female spawn. For obvious reasons the gentleman prefers to remain anonymous. It seems that after smoking a small quantity of what must have been some excellent weed, Ms. Vela became a little suspicious of her potential son-in-law’s activities, and like any red-blooded American mom, she took decisive action.

According to reports Vela lured the unsuspecting dude to her trailer where she and two henchmen…
